New to the Forum. PE Exam Hopeful

Hi everyone. My name is Jeff. I just came across this forum. A little about my background.

I have a BSME from the Georgia Institute of Technology (class of 2000). I took and passed the FE my 1st try way back in April 2000 a month before I graduated. My first engineering job was with HESM & Associates as a mechanical designer for a couple of years before taking a position as a Facility Engineer with UPS at their Windward Data Center. I worked there for 18 years and did quite a bit of engineering work on the chilled water plant at the facility. I then worked for Holder Construction in their MEP division for a couple of years before staring my current role as the QA/QC Program Development Manager for an HVAC construction subcontractor earlier this year.

I’m hoping to take the PE Exam maybe within the next year. Being that it’s going on 22 years since I took the FE I am nervous but very determined. I have the engineering credentials and great references from current and former people I have worked with. Two things I am most concerned with:

1. I have two folks that I have worked with that are PEs. One has his PE in ME in California and the other has multiple PEs in various states but his are all EE. I might be able to get my old boss at HESM who has his ME PE in Georgia but it’s been 22 years ( actually worked with him when the firm was bidding on some commissioning work while I was at Holder). This I feel will be a big hurdle.

2. I’m a bit confused as to where the best study references are for the PE. Seems there are tons to choose from.

Anyway, apologies for the rambling. Hoping to meet new friends and get some advice on how to tackle this beast in the near future.

Hi Jeff, and welcome to EB! You have found a great resource that will hopefully help you figure out how to ultimately tackle the P.E. Exam and become a licensed P.E.

My first question for you is, have you identified which specific P.E. Exam you think you want to take? If you haven’t, take a look at the exam specs for each of the different P.E. Mechanical exams, and see if one stands out as best suited for your experience. Once you’ve figured that out, I’d suggest posting in the Mechanical subforum with more specific questions that you might have about study materials. It’s also worth perusing threads there to see if anyone has already posted useful information!

As for the P.E.’s you’ve worked with or under in the past, I’m guessing the context here is for actually applying for licensure? Have you reviewed your state’s laws and regulations around applying for P.E. licensure?

I'm also ME. But I'm an MDM guy. Based on your experience, I'm guessing you're probably going to do either TFS or HVAC.

Thank you for the warm welcome Lego PE! I have looked at the different ME disciplines and I am leaning toward the Thermo/Fluids test right now as that is where I most of my engineering background is and I feel I have the better grasp of. Yes I am looking for obtaining my PE license in Georgia and 3 PE references is required. Like I said I have two I’m pretty solid on with one wild card being my former boss at HESM.
