Metcalf & Eddy Wastewater

It seems like the Metcalf & Eddy Wastewater book was recommended by a lot of people.

There is a $5.00 version from 1972, and the current $240 version.

Will the 1972 version be relevant to the PE exam?

The reason I even consider this is because the CA survey exam had a plethora of questions about outdated surveying equipment, so its possible the 1972 may be very useful if the Water Resources/Env. test also covers outdated material. And also because I would like to keep my $235.

I have that edition and brought it, but did not use it. It does have some info in it, such as Streeter-Phelps, and chlorination process, but I never usefully opened it during my exam.

I bought a copy for around $150 through Barnes & Noble and found it very helpful during the PM portion. There aren't many references I recommend but this is in the top three for sure. If you work in wastewater you should have it anyway.

I bought a copy off of ebay (it was the International Edition) for $30 The pages are thinner, and everything is in metric, but the book is still the same. I didn't even crack the thing through the entire exam, and I passed.

I only used it a handful of times during the exam but I used it a lot when I was studying and getting ready for the exam. It also comes in handy when they ask you concept and definition questions on the exam since most of my studying focused on formulas, and plug-n-chug type problems. I really didn't focus in on definition and concepts during my studying.

I bought the international $30 version in college (2008) and the thing is falling apart, but with a bunch of packing tape its back together and helped me pass the PE this time around! So save money and buy the $30 version!

The book I purchased is not an international version so maybe that's why it was so much higher? At any rate, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the international version to save some big $$$. That extra left over $$$ can buy a few study guides too.

I took it and used it several times for qualitative questions. I passed the exam in '09 and used M&E 2nd edition. It was good enough for the exam. If you work in a reasonable size firm, someone likely has one you can borrow. We didn't use it in college because my professor preferred a combined water and wastewater book. That reminds me to note that M&E is the standard for ww, but does not include drinking water.

It's been quite a while since I took the exam, but I know I had that book. If I remember correctly, I only ended up using it for studying for the most part. While taking the exam, I was able to find just about everything I needed in the CERM. If you're that interested, I can find it in the garage and let you know what version it is.

I thumbed though this book after passing the exam, and didn't think it was necessary.

I stuck with the CERM and with my college notes for the WR afternoon exam.

I'm planning on purchasing both M&E and Cornwell books. Do you think earlier editions are still ok for the current/future exams? I'm assuming not much has changed since early 2000s? What did you guys notice? I have found some earlier (non international) editions on Amazon/Ebay that are cheap.

I took a second edition M&E with me in '09 and it was fine. Maybe find a 3rd or 4th ed. 5th edition is current. I am not familiar with Cornwell.

I have learned to like the international editions btw. I have two for use on the power PE this April. Great stuff. Paperback, but for an 8th of the price...

I rented it from Amazon. Flipped through it but never used or needed it. Passed first try.
