License Expiration Date

Just received a license # (June 2021) after passing the exams in April 2021.

• License issuance date is June 4, 2021.
• Listed license expiration date is... September 2021. <3 months later.

Any other recent licensees see the same? I understand that the renewal process is relatively straightforward. Just seems... odd. Thoughts?

I was just issued my license yesterday too, and I have the same expiration. I'm not sure the reasoning, but maybe it's some sort of probationary thing? Hopefully we'll get an email or letter from the board explaining why that is, or if we need to do anything (PDUs, etc?)

To my understanding, the application fee submitted to the broad is only application fee. We should soon get a renew notice to renew license for the next two years.

I don't know about CA specifically. But in general, in some states, your initial licensure is only a partial term. And then you are put on the same renewal cycle as everyone else.

So hypothetically, everyone may have to renew in September. So your initial licensure goes from whenever you get it to September. Then AFTER that you switch to a normal term. I'm in Louisiana and that's approximately how it works.

Looks like CA is $175 for the application fee compared to NY at $377 which includes registration for 3 years after the initial licenses.

On the license renewal information page on the BPELSG website it explains (copy/paste below):

First-time Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors: The application fee includes licensure through the first renewal quarter after the license is issued. Approximately one (1) to two (2) months after being notified of licensure, first-time licensees will receive a renewal notice for payment of the full renewal fee. Once renewed, the license will be valid for an additional two (2) years. The renewal month and day will remain the same until the license is retired, canceled, or revoked.

California has a biannual renewal set up in 4 chunks (one per quarter). Once you get your license, its good until the next renewal, at which point you will go to an every other year renewal. its not hard to renew, and my guess is they do it this way to spread all the renewals out (there are a LOT of california PEs). i passed my CA pe in Dec 2019 and had to renew in March 2020. Not all states do it this way, but it really doesnt make a difference once you get into the two-year cycle.

Sactomacto and C. Ryan have your answers. The "quarterly" cycle is really the result of 1) when the exams were historically administered (spring and fall) and 2) when the Board met to approve the exam results/licenses. Both of those don't really occur in that same fashion as they used to since the California Board issues licenses on a rather continuous schedule now and the Board has delegated the licensing authority to the board staff.

You'll receive some sort of mailed notification 30-60 days prior to your expiration date to your address of record. You'll have the choice of mailing in payment, dropping payment off at the Board office or, as what is quickly becoming the most popular method, creating a user profile in BPELSG Connect, the Board's new online application/licensing system, and paying your license renewal online.

If for some reason you don't receive the paper notification by, or don't want to rely upon, US Mail, I recommend that you go ahead and spend the five minutes to create the user profile in Connect so that you receive email (and text if you want) reminders. Much better system in my opinion, but then...like the guy in the old commercials for hair club for men, I'm biased
