Electrical PE in Cali

Hello all,

I am trying to register and complete the necessary apps/paperwork to take the Electrical PE this October, i am a little lost and would appreciate your help !!

I have read many FAQs and directions sheets on the PE State site (http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/) but seem to be even more confused amongst the lingo they use.

If i understand correctly, the first step is to fill out the State App + Fees + Questionare Exam + (4) Engagement Forms.

My issue is with the engagement forms, are those the same as recommendations ?

Does having a Masters Degree (Engagement/Academic Credit) affect this at all ?

Do they have to come from EEs/CEs/MEs, some combination ?

I have a BS & MS degree in Elec Engineering and have worked for about 4+ yrs after my BS. The EE folks i work with dont have their PEs but a few Mech managers i deal with have their PEs.

Help and feedback would be appreicated

I am Civil, but I'll attempt to answer your questions. Yes, the first step is to submit a completed application to the state board. See this page which describes a completed application:

Not sure what you mean by "Questionare (questionnaire )Exam" but if you mean the take-home exam, then yes. Send that in with your completed application (it isn't necessarily due at the time of application but you might as well).

Not sure what you mean by Recommendations but you probably mean References. Yes, the engagement forms are for your 4 references.

A BS counts as 48 months of the 72 experience needed. I think (I'm not entirely sure about this) that an MS counts as an additional 12 months experience. But check with your evaluator: http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/about_us/contact.shtml (Evaluator 1,2, or 3 based on your last name).

As an EE applicant, it states on the engagement form instructions that you can use a combo of EEs or CEs as references.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may not qualify to take the PE based on what you said. You need to have qualifying work experience under the supervision of a PE.

I appreicate the reposnse a lot ...

According to this flowchart, it seems i am qualified, although nothing is entireley clear.

My bigger concern now is the engagement thing, since technically ME PEs dont count.

I do work in the field of manufacturing, so i am not sure if that puts me in the excempt field ?

Pete - I filed my application for the Fall 2012 exam to take the Electrical Power exam and also had less than the required years of experience under an electrical PE. There is an exception for California manufacturing companies which I used and my application was accepted. Check out the FAQ on the CA licensing board site.

Page 1 of the recommendation includes a verification of the engagement and page 2 includes the references license information. On page 2 I used the notes section to comment that the reference person was employed at a California manufacturing company and was exempt from licensure.
