Potentiometer replacement. Any thought?

hello experts
am trying to do a replacement of the joystick pot with another thing that could be activated using the reed switch. AM thinking towards switch closed/open.
pot movement=number over time
i think a counter going to the digital pot but i do not have any experience on how i should work it out. Any idea on how i should do it will be greatful.

how do I order this one? I think the project is so nice. I got a lot of interest in it. Can it be used in a play station too?
