PE in California

Hello all, I’m moving to California this summer and I would like to sit for the PE exam. I have five years of experience as a faculty ( teaching), and research. Would that counts toward my engagement record?
if not, can I sit for PE exam without applying my paper work and get approved from the board?
I emailed them and called several time and always end up with someone’s voicemail.
I appreciate any input.

Individuals considering licensure in California as a Professional Engineer are able to register with NCEES and sit for the PE exam prior to submitting the application to the California Board, provided that the FE exam was previously passed.

As for what you've stated about your experience, teaching and research alone is not sufficient to count as work experience, especially if the research is generic in nature. It must be related to an actual engineering project gained under an individual licensed in that engineering discipline and in responsible charge of that project engineering work. The amount of required months is based on the highest level of degree obtained. If ABET BS, then you need 2 years of experience after graduation. If ABET MS (or MS associated with ABET BS program), then you need 1 year of experience after graduation.

I was hoping to waive FE. I have ABET - PhD which requires only 12 months of experience to waive FE exam.
so I guess if my experience is not counted , I need to take both FE and PE. I was wondering if I can just sit for PE now without approval for FE waiver while working in industry and then apply when I have 12 months.

According to California Board Rule 438(a)(7), if you have an ABET - PhD, you can waive the FE exam. However, you must submit an application to the California Board first and receive that waiver so the Board can approve your PE registration on the NCEES site.
