ipod / iphone app link

Invision Power Board (who hosts this forum) has an app through itunes that you can download to access the forum easier on your ipod / iphone

I just downloaded it, and it isn't anything but a separate web browser that has a homepage with links to your forums. It looks and functions exactly like opening the forum in Safari. I tried it with this forum (IPB 2.3) and with another forum I frequent (IPB 3.0), and they are both the same.

What I don't understand is that it asks you for your username and password when you set up a link in the app, but the first time you go to the forum, you still have to sign in. Why do they collect that information if they aren't going to use it to automatically log you in?
