@NikR_PE I feel like I need to go full LI/record myself one day while I’m talking to family. I think we had a whole accent convo where @RBHeadge PE was confused by how I talked and super exactingly identified what my accent technically was (where I drop all the letters at the end of words and diphthong it up).

We can also get our resident english major @squaretaper LIT AF PE on that task.
I think it was a discussion on rhotic versus non-rhotic accents...maybe. Alternatively, something something dropped syllable something something.

For the record, English ≠ Linguistics, I'm just a hobbyist. :rotflmao:

Also, @RBHeadge PE here is something for you to analyse

I'll start by saying that I wasn't confused by jk's accent. Mostly inquiring about her "natural" accent. I've heard her talk and it wasn't characteristically LI. But she was probably subcounciously code switching a little so the more obvious LI bits got dropped.

Accents are studied by sociolinguists, not necessarily English majors.

re: video. Yep, I'm very familiar with those accents. Although they're mostly using AAVE, rather than Baltimore-English.

Yeah, I think confused was the incorrect word choice.  I think it was that whole convo in another thread where everyone was talking about how we pronounced stuff and mine felt really off and I was getting grumpy.

...And I totally consciously code-switched.  Every LIer knows that a LI accent means you're considered stupid, even if you live on LI, so a bunch of people in white collar jobs tend to 'train it out' when working.  Ask @txjennah PE; her hubby heard me on the phone with family and was delighted by how thick my accent got suddenly.

I was in the bathroom so missed the real LI accent. I honestly love those accents. I like hearing you pronounce "coffee" and "water."
