see, i prefer the hook on the back of the ear because i cannot find anything since the OG apple in ear buds with the silicone sleeve that don't hurt me. And I don't even apple. 

Apple earbuds suck after about 6 months of use. Mine currently sound like tin cans. With a bee living in them.

agree, but they were the only in-ear ones that didn't hurt my ears. redistributing the load to outside the ear helped

Ahhhhhhhh, apple earbuds hurt my ear so much (not the silicone ones, the normal hard plastic ones)!  I tried them one day at work, since I accidentally threw my other set of earbuds into my tea...They hurt my ears sooooooooo much, I just worked in silence the rest of the day!  

Skullcandy holds up pretty well, and, again, they're cheap enough that if I have to replace them once every couple of years (which has been my usual round since I usually end up throwing them in tea/the wash/accidentally eaten by cat/etc.) it's still way cheaper than a 'real' pair of earbuds with all the new do-dads.

Yeah, I can't wear actual headphones because I have too many earrings/it hurts having them pressed against my head after a few minutes, so buds all the way for me!  I like the skullcandy ones because they give you a bunch of the little ear nubs so you can change the size of what is going in your ear, and it doesn't wrap around the back of my ear like a clip (again, earrings get in the way).  I usually work with one ear in/one out, so the cord really is great/working for me so far!

@ChebyshevII_PE I haven't noticed a delay and they were really easy to sync to bluetooth on my phone (literally just hold a button for 5-secs and it popped up).  I like the skullcandy brand since they seem to have an auto-heavier bass, which works since I'm usually listening to club music/trash rap which sounds so much better with the treble/bass up'd a bit.  They're pretty cheap, so I don't mind replacing them/accidentally forgetting them in the wash (I got 2 pairs, one wireless and one wired, from BJs for $20, which is worth it to me).

Another good/cheap option are the Soundpeats Q12 (or related Bluetooth earbuds). They're lightweight, reliable, and cheap enough I don't lose sleep over them if they're damaged/lost. I've kept up with my "reading" listening to audiobooks at work. I get them from my local library. Good selection and the price is right! Go support your library!

I'd try those, but the weird little arm thing puts me off.  I have a couple of conch piercings so I don't think it would really be a snug fit in my ear?  AND I LOVE MY LIBRARY EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE KEEP GETTING STABBED THERE.

Oh no!  I get worried because my friend is a librarian at the branch, and...unfortunately, it's near the train station that only gets 3-trains a day.  So it's become a really big drug hang out/gang hang out area since the surrounding area is a derelict main street that nobody is working to make better.
