But then a bunch of small aircraft crashes happened within a week after I took an intro flight.

 
I lunched an engine in flight about a year after I got my license. It gets your attention.

 
A friend who flies said flying is hours of fun (sometimes boring) but also filled with seconds of shear terror.

 
My cousin got the army to pay for him to fly choppers. Down side is two separate deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.

 
I've only been really scared in an aircraft once. Had a near mid-air while working on my instrument rating. My instructor yanked the controls, my head bobbed up just in time to see a windscreen full of Cessna 172. I think we missed by about 50 feet. I don't think the other guy ever even saw us.

50' in mid air should look like 2 inches.
