Submitted my Application for PE Exam Georgia

We’ll after spending about 4 months preparing my PE application for Georgia, I finally got my last PE endorsement from my supervisor at my previous job and sent my application to the licensing board last Saturday. They received it Monday and processed the fee that day. I got my email that the application is in the review process.

My stomach has been in knots. I spent many hours detailing my experience. 1 year at a design firm as mechanical designer (Salas O’Brian) where I was under a PE (endorsement by him),18 years as a facilities engineer at UPS Windward Data Center (endorsements from my two engineering managers (not PEs) and one PE that I worked with often and was my mentor but NOT my direct supervisor), 20 months at Holder Construction as MEP Coordinator (worked under PE who also gave me his endorsement) and finally 13 months presently as QA/QC manager at Gainesville Mechanical (endorsement from the owner/president (not PE). Copy of my EIT from the state, college transcripts (BSME Georgia Tech 2000) and all the other required documents.

I did NOT take the experience record lightly. I believe in total there are 10+ pages of my 20+ years experience and emphasized design, calculating, review, developed, in the descriptions and included some specific example of projects and work I did for each endorsement. Many hours went into it. All of my endorsers loved the write ups and verbally gave me high praise (the endorsement forms are all in sealed envelopes so I couldn’t read their comments). I’m mainly concerned about my experience being rejected at UPS since I didn’t work directly under a PE but I have a PE I worked with often who endorsed my experience there.

Anyway I know I won’t get an answer on acceptance for a couple of weeks. I know a lot of folks here can relate to my anxiety. Guess I just wanted to put this out there. Been pacing all day with doubt.

If I remember correctly I had 1 1/2 pages for experience for my 1st engagement, 5 for my 2nd engagement, 3 for my 3rd engagement and 3 1/2 for my 4th and final engagement so total of about 13 pages. I submitted this straight to the Georgia Board.

"Per the previous reviewers request, please combine records which can be verified by the same supervisor. It is important that you combine records as many are so short that some licensing boards might discount them.

Please Modify both sections according to the following guidelines:

1. The TASKS and DUTIES section should not describe nor mention specific projects or project work, rather it should be a general description of your engineering of your engineering responsibilities. Provide details on the general type of calculations, design packages/specification, reviews, and tasks you performed.

2. Please revise the PROJECTS section in accordance with the guidelines below for clarity.

A. The projects section should contain pertinent information on enough SPECIFIC individual representative projects to document the full span of this employment experience. (Minimum of 1 per every 2 years)
B. Provide the dates that you worked on the project – this will assist in verifying that the full span of years is documented. Note: If the project end date is in the future please put the year of submission as the end date (2022).
C. Provide a separate paragraph for each project.
D. Provide project name and location.
E. Include specific project details such as structure type, structure size, regulation compliance, project duration, and size of project.
F. Describe the specific engineering tasks that you performed yourself. Use terms such as “I designed,” “I calculated” and “I recommended.”

Mr. Scarfaz, you have to respect the National Council for their communication and transparency. Their website shows you exactly what is approved and what is being reviewed. Their reviewers provide you the valuable feedback needed to revise your submissions to their standards. They clearly operate differently than individual state boards, because national standards are more broad in some ways and specific in others. I know people who should be licensed but they are not, because the state board rejected their experience with no feedback. Without telling you what to do, I highly recommend working with the National Council to get it resolved. They are not perfect, but they hold a lot of power over your career, and are willing to work with you.

Couple comments that will hopefully assist you with resolving this...

Opening request from NCEES appears to be based on what they've seen with the actions of some licensing boards and are intended to be helpful in ensuring that what you submit is helpful towards approval. While it is not a demand or a "shall", I would still find this helpful in terms of clearly documenting your experience.

The remainder of what you shared leads me to believe that you spent a great deal of time documenting specifics of the actual project(s) and not sufficient time documenting exactly what YOU did on that project(s) in terms of engineering tasks, decisions, responsibilities, etc. Engineers sometimes have the tendency to do this (ala This project cost XX millions of dollars and used this one-in-a-lifetime design to...) for your licensing application, no one cares about how much the project cost or what it really entailed. Its about YOU and what engineering YOU did on it.

That last note...tells me you weren't clear on exactly what YOU did that was engineering (ala things that would require a licensed engineer to perform or a subordinate working under the responsible charge of a licensed engineer)

As an NCEES Record holder since the ‘90s I have seen the evolution of the NCEES record system. I am licensed in 30 states (we do specialty engineering that requires multiple licenses) and have used the NCEES record for all but my original Pennsylvania license. I understand your frustration with the comments received, but please realize that the reviewers are reacting to feedback they get from the States.

When they went from the old paper system to the present system, they originally wanted the “legacy” records to re-establish the entire trail. At best that would be difficult as many of my supervisors were retired or worse. Eventually they compromised a bit.

About every 2 years you will need to reverify your employment. This will trigger a new review of your work experience. The last time I updated the experience I received reviewer comments on previously approved experience. I contacted the review and they said it was because the States have been asking for certain things. The reviewer was responsive and we worked together to get the corrections approved.

Remember this is an evolving process. As I stated, I have used NCEES for 29 comity licenses and have not been rejected or questioned on a single one. Keeping my fingers crossed on #31 (California).

Hang in there, there is real value in the NCEES record.
