Hope someone can help to clarify this.
When cross section area at station one is zero, while the cross section area at station two one is non-zero, which equation should I use to calculate the volume: average end area or pyramid?
For question 38, Chapter 6 from Reza’s book (Fall 2010). Cross section area for Station 12+00 is zero and for station 13+00 is 975 ft2. Reza uses average end area method and the excavation volume is 1,806 cy.
Mansour has the exact same question in his booklet (problems 2 & 3 from Sample Exam 1). Mansour uses the pyramid method and got an excavation volume of 1203.7 cy. The results are very different from Reza. If follow Reza, the answer will be A and if follow Mansour the answer will be B.
