Hi All,

I am just curious, might be boost up those already preparing, how long would it generally take to prepare for FE and PE respectively??

I completely understand that it depends on individual caliber but if we see replies from 10 different people, we can easily estimate average time it would take for a fellow of average caliber. I m just looking at that. Please post, how long it took for you.

Regds,

Pa1

I would say, to increase your probability of passing, about 150 to 200 focussed hours for FE (depends on how far removed from college you are) and 250 to 300 hours for PE.

The second time around for me, probably a total of 100 hours for PE exam. But that was second time, and the first, I would say about the same ... I just changed my study strategy for the second time around, that is why no major increase in study hours.

For a person who want to take FE exam, if graduate in engineering 20yrs + ago, 5 mo prep needed, 2 hrs study on average per day, more study hrs for weekend. Assuming taking PM General, you need to go through about 42 chapters in the FE Lindburg book 3 times (doing problems), plus some extra study of statistics from an elementary/introduction of statistics book (because in the FE Lindburg book there is only ONE chapter for statistics, not enough!). Use the NCEES ref book exclusively for practice (don't forget looking at other section like environmental eng. of the Ref book), know how to use the calculator (the Casio fx-115MS) fluently, better yet bring both a Casio and HP-33s to the exam, load the HP with finance formulae, beam deflection formulae, determinant of 3x3 matrix formula, invert of 2x2 matrix formula, etc. Make sure you know how to operate both calculators. You will pass for sure.

Less than 100 hours for the PE if it's used smartly. Quantity is not going to make up for poor quality.
