My family has always called them mudbugs, not sure if that's a thing.  Also, almost never have them on Long Island due to regional seafood reigning king (i.e, lobster rolls + stuffed clams + oysters + mussels), so I feel like I haven't eaten one of them ever?

My mom joked with us kids about how we pronounced words. I didn’t understand it, until I had kids who are now fluent in east Texas George Bush speak.

Yep that happens here from time to time.

You have to realize:

  1. The city does not have road salt.
  2. No one has snow tires, winter tires, or tire chains. They don't even sell winter tires here.
  3. No one has any experience driving in snow or ice
  4. Our pipes aren't well insulated, so they can easily freeze or burst
People make fun for a little bit of snow or a minor freeze shutting down the city, like southerns are soft. But we just aren't equipped for it.
That and there are these huge overpasses, at least in Texas, that become death traps in ice.

So I was in a long term relationship with someone from SE Alabama, and she spent most of her life in the south. She wasn't prepared for the climate differences. So I took her car to shop in the late autumn because it was misbehaving and the mechanic complained that it looks like no one had ever even attempted to winterize it. I told him, we'll yeah, she's from Alabama, and it doesn't ever get cold there.

Her fist snow/sleet/ice storm was a real challenge too. It was early in the storm and she kept slipping on the pavement when she tried to walk home from the train station. She called me and wanted me to come drive her the 3 blocks to her place. I was 45 min away in clear weather so this was clearly impractical. I had to explain to her twice to walk on the grass so she could get traction. She eventually tried it, and was able to walk home.

Sounds like Seattle. I had my college classes cancelled for a week for less than this.
I had to crutch in 6in of snow my senior year. Classes were only *delayed* once in my 4 years. Literally no one understood what that meant since we hadn't had a delay before
