I'm surprised at the number of people who have gone through th desk of others.

I was told there was some hot chocolate mix in his desk... Got caught by my manager. I told him what I was looking for, two weeks later there was a container of hot chocolate mix in the kitchen for all to use.

So in the end, I think it was a good thing

edit: Just to clarify, I was not looking through my manager's desk... it was the intern student's desk and we all know they don't have any rights in the office in the first place.
