Head Start on NCEES Record?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has ever started their NCEES Record process before actually obtaining their PE. I took my PE exam in April and I’m quite confident on passing. Reading from other posts that NCEES records take several months, I want to start sending all the required documentation to my references/past employers/my university/etc. ahead of time. Is this possible before obtaining your PE?

I'm fairly sure that the required forms are posted on the Record website, so you could go ahead and send the paperwork to your references. But I wouldn't formally start the process until after you have officially passed the exam.

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about. What exactly would you be sending to the NCEES? You send your info to the state board. they approve you. once approved by the state, they notify the ncees that you are eligible to sit for the exam. once the exam is over, ncees grades the exam, notifies the state boards of the scores, who in turn either directly notify the candidates or permit the ncess to notify the same (state dependent). once you have been notified that you passed the remainder of the licensing process comes from the state board. ncees would then be out of the process as they are just the testing entity.

NJ, the OP is referring to this process. With an NCEES record, it's a much easier process to get licensed in other states provided you already hold one in your home state (or other). However, where some states only require 3 PE references, the record application requires 5, which can make it more difficult to obtain. This is because there are a few states that actually do require 5 references to become licensed.

As Wil pointed out, I agree that you can start the process on contacting your intended references and gathering your work history records/school transcripts. But to actually submit the complete record to NCEES for review, they are going to ask for your PE license number and corresponding state. Without that information, the process cannot be formally started. Any other questions, feel free to ask. And good luck on your results.

Thanks guys – the following link answered my question. I can start the process and enter my education details in the application process, but will not be able to access the rest of the form (which includes work experience, work references) until I get my PE license and enter that information into the application.

I was just concerned that some of my references would take a long time to fill out the necessary forms that I need and send them back to NCEES. But I will wait till I get licensed to officially send everything out.

and I think they give you a 50% discount if you enroll in ncees within 1 year of passing the exam, go ahead and do it, I promise you that I wish i did!

I went through this process and it was much easier than it seems at first. Specifically, it was easy because you can piece mail the required documents. The required references are much easier than the Ca references since all that is required is a signature; none of ther stamps and sealed envelopes are required. I went through the entire process in less than 2 weeks. I don't see any reason to start early. What took the longest was getting the verification from my state board saying I was actually licensed. Obviously you can't do that portion yet.

I did the same thing. It won't help you much. You have to fill out the entire application (data about you, license number, references, work history). Then once it is 100% complete it get's submitted to NCEES where they think about it for a week. If it isn't approved they tell you where to make changes and then resubmit wait for them to approve. Once they approve your application, then you have to go out and solicit all the "supporting documents" to the claims you made. They give you custom forms for all your work experiences, college transcripts (from all college that credit college credit was received), So you aren't gaining anything by starting early since you won't be able to start getting references, transcripts, or work experience documentation without submitting the application which can't be done without a license number.

On top of it not helping you, you only get a year to complete the application (though it only took me 3-4 months. So if somehow you take an extra long time, it may cut your time short because you actually started the application earlier than you should have.

Yes you will have to get new references if you want to have an NCEES record. You will also need to solicit at least one new reference per year to keep your NCEES record active. If you will need to be licensed in multiple states, this makes the process MUCH easier because you would have to solicit references for each state you apply to. The process isn't perfect because each state has its own restrictions on what it will accept from the NCEES records, but it usually gets you much further in the application process, much faster.
