I am also generally desk bound (construction management) however, unlike the field guys, I know where I am going each day... and other than meetings/walk throughs/etc. I am here in the office. If things get slow, the field guys wonder if a layoff is coming or another project... the main office staff don't have that problem. It does sometimes seem like a jail cell, but it is security.

Like in the movie Shawshank Redemption, after a while you'll become institutionalized and all your dreams, passion and drive will gone and your only hope will be that thing called "retirement". ...and if you're like the people in my family you'll finally retire at 65 and you'll have a good 5 to 7 years before you die of cancer or a heart attack. Aint life grand.

ok . . . .
here i sit . . .BORED out of my skull!!. . . . at this DESK!! . . in a 8 x 8 cubicle.

i went to college to be a civil engineer, and i PROMISED myself i would NEVER ride a desk for 8 hrs . . . . .

so here i am. born and raised on a farm . . . rather stand in the freezing cold or heat of the summer than sit inside tied to a desk.

besdies the INSANE construction company hours and driving . . . WHAT CAN I DO??? . . . .

oh yeh . . .I AM GOING to pass the exam in April!

Could be worse- see, I WANT to be sitting at my desk right now, doing work that's not getting done, but instead, I'm stuck running around all day, escorting uncleared contractors through the building. What a waste of a GS-13 engineer...

I like field work better, too, but it gets old quick. My last two jobs have been pretty good balances between office and field work, I think. Hard to do the job without making site visits!
I agree with you , you can not do the job if you never work in job site especially in construction industry

There are lots of great jobs that offer some variety in the engineering profession. For example, you could get on with a government contractor and do jobs in foriegn countries. You could work for an oil exploration company and hang out on oil rigs in the Gulf. If your looking for a truly unique opportunity, apply for a position with the FBI, they are hiring engineers these days.

There are jobs available in Dubai, lots of prostitutes and booze there.

So, I got this friend who is in the FBI, he says that it is nothing like you see on TV. He said they basically sit around and read through old files and documents, that is about it. He thinks it might cool to work in the counter-terrorism branch, but they won't let him, because he keeps losing his gun.

I just moved into a construction job for the first time in my life after my company got bought out and closed down (manufacturing). I really kind of like the construction life other than the hours (about 60/week). Plus I get to have one heck of a farmer's tan (goggle eyes and all)!

I always wanted to be a...lumberjack. The larch, the mighty sequoia,

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK....

I feel your pain. I would much rather be breaking ice, and standing chest deep in cold water (with waders) on a morning with drizzle with greenheads and teal buzzin my head as the plop down in my dekes.

I also would rather be playing baseball on a 120 degree day in SW Oklahoma or West Texas than setting in a cube.

Even moving cattle, fixing fence, or hauling hay sounds good occasionally. But I don't want to go backwards on the pay either.
