Or fail from being just careless.  A PE needs to check their own work and anyone else working under them.   

That is exactly why they should (and do) put answers that most common errors lead to.

I may have been at a slight advantage when I took it I think in April 2011 (maybe its still the same test) because, aside from having a MS in structural, I mistakenly studied from the PPI SE book

What I would recommend, if you have the time, is use that SE book as a guide.

Do you know what topics you had trouble on? I remember the guy next to me was getting killed with transportation (I guess that was morning). If you did ok on the structural part, I guess my advice on studying from SE book wouldn't help much
