Hello there

My friend is interested in taking PE material science/metallurgy exam. He has masters degree and about 5 years of experience at a material science firm. He worked with a couple of PE civil engineer consultants (non-supervisors) but not PE Material science. Are there any states that do not need a reference from PEs? or minimal references from PE, so he can apply there using his non-PE supervisory references.

There doesnt seem to be many PEs in Material Science/Metallurgy and to know or get reference from them is impossible.

Thanks

Your friend needs to contact the Professional Engineer Board and explain the situation. They may waive the need for PE references for materials science/metallurgy. Since I am a licensed metallurgical engineer they did for me about 10 years ago. However, I had to provide a detailed work history and have one or more Supv confirm my work and involvement with projects.
