    DC machines have hysteresis losses?

I looked for that question in spinup exams, exam 4 Q59 is about analog VOM's not about hystersis losses and DC machines. I do not recall seeing that question in Spin-ups, do you have the right exam?

Where to "park" your rainy fund?

The only place to get a good return today is the stock market, but you need to have the tolerance for risk. If you need the liquidity in an emergency, it may take a few days to get the cash. Open up an online brokerage account, link the brokerage account to a bank account to allow timely...

Where to "park" your rainy fund?

The max for pre-tax 401K per year is $17,500. If you have un-needed income, this should be the first place that you should max out, otherwise you lose out on the tax benefits to pre-tax 401K's. If you are 50 and older your max is $17,500 + $5,500 = $23,000 per year. Also if you have a company...

Spin-up problem 3-76 Auto Transformer terminology

I figured it out. If the dots are opposite each other on the windings it is buck. If they are in alignment it is boost. For a step-up and buck, the windings should increase from source to load. The dots on the windings should not be aligned but be opposite each other.

Spin-up problem 3-76 Auto Transformer terminology

Step up and Step down are independent of boost or buck. I know step up is if the windings increase, and step down if the windings decrease. The buck or boost is a function of the dots on the windings, I always get confused on what determines when they are boost or buck.

Comments on Preparation for Power PE Exam?

Both the Grainger and Wildi books are good. Do not forget to get an approved calculator. It is best to practice using the calculator you will be using on the actual exam. You could find the list on NCEES website.

Spinup vs Complex Imaginary for Power PE Exam

I passed the exam using both Spinup and NCEEs sample exams. With Spinup now in their second edition, I would most definitely get SpinUp.

    Spin Up #2-15

It is in the other thread at http://engineerboards.com/index.php?showtopic=18311 I also pasted it below For these type of problems I use the trial and error method. I multiply the generator MVA by the other generators impedance. SA = 2 times 3 = 6 SB = 3 times 4 = 12 Then I see SA is equal...

The MVA method does not include converting to per unit. There must be an error in Camara's book.

Mauldinite, You are looking at it backwards. You handle the parallel power sources as additive and the series as capacitors.

    Spin-Up Sample Exam Problems Discussion

I agree with EEVA, both methods should get the same answer. During the exam if I have enough time I will do it both ways to check myself, to make sure I solved the fault problem correctly. Bethy, you must be talking about NCEES prob # 513. The way to solve this problem using the method from...

I like the question for the week, but can the solution be posted at the same time as the question. It makes it more convenient that way. I prefer not to have to wait until Friday.
