    POWER PE used internationally

Hello. If you are working for a US firm they would likely look favorably upon getting your PE, even if you can't use it since you're working overseas. It would demonstrate a certain level of knowledge in the field and familiarity with US electrical standards. I work for an international company...

Wanted- Power Reference Manuals by Camara

Hello all, I am wondering if anyone has the EE Power Reference Manual by Camara that they'd be interested in selling? It looks like this. Please send me a message if you have one in good condition, I will pay via Paypal or similar secure means. Thanks!

Typical Salary for Electrical Engineer (5 yrs)

$87k seems high to me, but if your boss doesn't freak it doesn't hurt asking. I did MEP consulting with 3 yrs of experience (BSEE, no PE) and got $63. East coast, not a major city. I know some companies automatically give raises for passing the PE. Anyone care to share how much the raise is? It...

Hot "Green" topics for the exam

Leeds is a city in the UK. The certification is called LEED. I don't remember any 'green' questions on the test, but a payback calc wouldn't be unreasonable. I would learn your different lighting technologies and which are more efficient than others (high pressure vs low pressure sodium, metal...

    Electrical Power Pe Exam Results

I passed too! Congrats to everyone else who passed too. VA state board doesn't have any info but NCEES site posted it. No score shown. Thanks again for everyone and your terrific help. Now off to sell most of my study material. Msg me if interested.

    ^ That's great :) Did he/she end up receiving a passing score?

    REMEMBER YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT

I certainly agree that the PM section was harder than the AM. Overall I was caught off guard by probably 5 questions on the test that I had no idea where to begin. None of my references helped me either. I did some educated guessing, but never saw a sample question even remotely similar. I...

Submit exam feedback to NCEES - time is almost up

Wish there had been exam-question-feedback forms available at the testing site. It was never mentioned to us by the proctors. I remember a couple of questions being unclear but without them infront of me I can't talk intelligently about them. Still trying to rationalize why it takes 3 months to...

Thank you and goodluck to everyone testing tomorrow

I want to post a big thank you to everyone who is involved in this forum. This forum has been a tremendous benefit for my studying as a way to check 'official' book answers and also a way to better understand the various sample problems I've run across. There are many times that I was stumped...

    NCEES #536- charging current?

^ yes, too much thinking on my part. Back to the KISS principle, thanks. DK, do you have time for a quick response for my three phase fault question here: http://engineerboards.com/index.php?showtopic=16724 ? I could really use a logic test before tomorrow AM.

    NCEES Power 517

I agree DK. What's always confused me is that a lagging load has a current with a negative angle (if voltage is at 0 degrees). However the same lagging load has POSITIVE Q. The same with a leading load that has positive current angle but negative Q. It seems backwards, but isn't. Confuses me...

    NCEES #536- charging current?

^ Hmm, I guess that's fair, and something I assume for motors. But it is assuming wye configuration. Especially for transmission lines it seems delta is more common. And a neutral conductor was not mentioned in the problem statement.

    NCEES #540

Not sure where you're coming from Rick. Ssc = 1/ Zpu is also = Spu/Zpu for this problem. This is since Spu on its own base = 1. I don't love their method either, I just pick a Sbase and then convert both of the Zpu to the new base. Then Ssc = Sbase/Zpu-total.

    NCEES Power 517

peterdubro- Good explanation of where the sqrt(3) comes from. It's standard for this type of problem to be given line voltage so S= sqrt(3)* V * I is very good to remember. If the voltage angle= 0 the conjugate of I isn't needed. So S= V I is a special case of S= V I*. I always use V I* to be...

    NCEES #536- charging current?

I have another quick question about this problem. The formula calls for Icharging = Vphase/ Xc. In this problem how do you know if the 115kV they give you is a phase or line voltage? If it's a delta system they would be the same and you wouldn't need to divide by sqrt(3) for the answer. How do...

^ O, that makes sense. Thanks Flyer for the consistently straightforward answers.

What topics need to be understood for NCEES Power problem 514?

Can anyone answer this three phase fault question from above? Summarized- With a three phase fault and no fault impedance I see the positive sequence voltage as being = 0. This makes intuitive sense to me since your line voltages would drop to 0 with a true 3 phase fault and no fault/line...
