    Passing structural 1

My point was that not all states that offered the SEI required it for licensing. And if they did require just the SEI, they now have to choose whether to require the 16 hour exam or just the PE Civil. The requirements for licensure vary by state.

    Passing structural 1

It depends on what your state board requires. If they only require a PE and you don't plan to work in any states that require the 16 hr exam for an SE (WA, OR, CA, IL...there are more, but I don't know them off the top of my head), then I'd say take the PE. It's MUCH easier than the 16 hr. Check...

    Structural or Civil?

If your state only requires a PE and you don't plan on doing any work in states that require SEs, then the PE civil-strucutral is a MUCH easier exam. The requirements to practice structural engineering vary widely by state.

    CE Internship Question

To highlight your work experience, I would list a few specific duties on your resume. Don't just say "computer analysis", say "modeled storm runoff using *insert program here*, conducted field visits and maintained non-conformance log" Try to give them a clear understanding of your experience...

    Will my Application be approved

Do you have a graduate degree? Most states would count that as one year of experience, then you'd only need to show 3 years beyond that. I would think that if you only worked somewhere for a limited amount of time you should be able to count that time regardless if it was a year or not, but I'm...

    Day Before Exam Preparation

I find a glass (or 3) of red wine helps put me to sleep just as well as NyQuil. I also make sure to drink a big glass of water right before bed to keep from getting a headache. When I find myself laying in bed for more than 20 minutes, I get up for an hour and read or watch tv and then try...

Few basic questions about Civil PE exam qual. in Illinois

You can take both the FE and PE in the same weekend (Fri/Sat), but you foreign undergraduate degree will need to be evaluated by a board approved evaluation service (pg. 3 of the application). I believe the evaluation is required even with a US graduate degree, but I would check with the board...

    Omitted Problems Affecting Passing Score

Read NCEES's Scoring Process: http://ncees.org/Exams/Pages/Scoring/Scoring_process.php It is posted on their website, but can be a little difficult to find. They don't refer to "omitting" any questions. What they will do is if a problem has unusual answer statistics (i.e. the wrong answer, or...

    First Job - Civil Engineer

My husband and I are both engineers. I work in the private sector, and my husband works for the government. Each has it's advantages. He gets to work an "alternative work schedule" meaning he works 9 hr/day and gets every other Friday off. He also is encouraged to telework up to one day per...

    Treating welds as lines

Use the inside radius since that is the part of the weld actually joining the two materials.

    Information on Hawaii Structural Market

Does anyone have an info on the job market for structural engineers in Hawaii, specifically Honolulu? I'm considering a move (these IL winters have gotten the best of me)! My spouse already has a job lined up, so moving isn't dependent on me finding something. But the flip side is that I have a...

    Self Plagiarism ?

I think the only question you need to ask is, would the school accept the work knowing that John received credit for it previously? If the answer is no, then maybe John should choose another topic...perhaps something related to ethics in business and engineering.

You're welcome. Glad we could get to the bottom of this one! Good luck with the exam.

Simple beam - NON intermediate load

For a cantilever w/backspan that has a load applied at the end of the cantilever, Mmax will always be at the support (Mmax=P*a) the moment between the supports is Pax/l and goes from Mmax at the right bearing to zero at the left support in a straight line. Pab/l would only be appropriate for a...

    Common Mistakes

Read each problem twice and underline exactly what you are solving for. It's easy to skim over what the problem is actually asking for. More than once I solved a problem that I thought asked "which of the following is..." only to find that more than one answer worked and that it was actually...

    Structural Breadth Portion

Spend some time on basic statics problems (determing reactions using sum of forces = 0 and sum of moments = 0) and determinate trusses (at the very least learn how to tell zero-force members...reactions and member forces would also be helpful).

***What are you doing in less than one month before exam?***

Definitely skip the ones that you are struggling on. I had at least 2-3 problems that I skipped and the answer either came to me or a later problem led me to a solution. I had to tell myself "let it go" at least a couple of times where I knew that I could do the problem, but that it would take...

***What are you doing in less than one month before exam?***

It sounds like you are in a much better place this time around. There isn't much more you can do, but a couple things that come to mind are... Try doing the sample exam in it's entirety. I did it as 4 hour increments over two days to spread it out a little bit. Tab your references so that you...

    State of Illinois Regulations

Some states do allow bound notes, however Illinois has additional rules about what it allows. From what I remember, you couldn't have any handwritten or class notes (bound or not). If there is something you really want to bring in, then you can ask the proctor day of and see what they say. But...

Simple beam - NON intermediate load

I don't have the practice exam, so I don't know exactly what the question is. I think the problem is in the first equation. Mr/I wouldn't give you the stress if it was force [lb]x distance [in]/second moment of inertia [in^4]...just looking at the units it would give you lb/in^3. I think the M...
