I am in need of some help on this problem. I have posted the problem and solution.

The part of the solution that is throwing me for a loop is when they determine the "area of cross section". I just don't follow how they are obtaining their numbers. It seems the they are multiplying the distance away from the centerline of the roadway section (denoted as F ##) but the numbers within the parenthesis are a mystery to me.

P.S. The solution equation formats did not print correctly. Most of the fractional and subcripts/supercripts are messed up. Post any questions if you have trouble following.

If anyone has any additional problems dealing with cross sections and volume of fill, I would appreciate a post.

Thanks in advance. Less than two weeks left.

here is my clue,

this quastion is very straight forward, the solution is very confuse.

I did sketch the two cross sections, convert the unit for fill to ft (even didn't mention the unit, but roadway cross section you will not have 22 ft, 22" is reasonable )

do basic calc. for area sta 10+00 = 80 sq ft sta 11+00 = 77 sq ft

end area method = 157 * 100 / 54 = 290 cu yard close enough

Good luck
