Overview of Engineering Technology

This position is in the Engineering Technology group. Engineering Technology acts like an internal consulting group that focuses on solving the most difficult engineering design, stress analysis, and materials of construction problems. The staff of experienced engineers tackles specific challenges that come up in the design of petrochemical refineries, and develops standards for the rest of the company to follow. Candidates for Engineering Technology positions will often have 10 years of experience or more, and will have had extensive exposure to a variety of engineering problems related to pipe stress (with particular focus on vibrations) and pressure vessels, and will have knowledge of engineering standards and specifications related to refineries. Strong FEA skills (using ALGOR) are essential.

Candidates for these positions will stand out because of their desire for a variety of engineering problems and their broad range of knowledge. Ideally candidates will have E&C backgrounds, but more likely they will have come up through consulting companies where they faced the most challenging and unique problems. Talented engineers will be drawn to these positions by the exciting and varied work typically only offered by consulting, and by the stability and growth opportunity offered by an established E&C company. Consultants that are getting burned out on the stress of unpredictable work and the constant pressure to sell may enjoy moving into this role. Also, while consultants may be required to do most of their work in the field after a problem has occurred, engineers at the company spend their time in the home office solving problems during the initial design phase. While Masters degrees are nearly essential, and PhD's are helpful, candidates must have extensive hands-on experience. Academic experience alone is not enough. PE licenses are a benefit, but not required.
