Has anyone here used the Rosetta Stone software?  If so, what'd you think of it?  We have an opportunity to buy at a very steep discount through our company, and they may even let us expense the balance.  I thought about picking up the Japanese module, as we will have extensive involvement with Japanese suppliers over the coming years.

IMO Rosetta Stone's one of the better language learning programs out there if you stick with it. You won't learn touristy phrases right off the bat but you will build useful vocabulary. My only complaint is that they include archaic vocabulary that no one uses anymore (like "sire" instead of "father"), and you won't know until you talk with a native speaker. I've run into this issue with the Thai, Russian and Spanish modules. Not a big deal though.

I've sampled it.  It seems legit.  Never been quite ready to pull the trigger on buying it though.  I will say it's much better than some of those tapes that have you repeat stupid phrases that mean things in english like:  "The cat has a mustache." and "It is dark outside."

I have used it trying to learn Mandarin. It's a good program and would recommend it, just have to make sure you use it 3-4 times a week with little to no time off.

I tried it for a few weeks for Spanish. It works if you put the time in and are consistent. I would combine it with the free Duolingo app for your phone. It's as close as you can get without private lessons or full immersion.
