anyone recommend the best reference for pipe networks and systems? seem to be getting those review problems wrong!

The PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR THE 11TH ED OF THE CERM (PPI2PASS) has some great examples - one is either considering parallel pipe or Hardy Cross method - then you can also consider an equivalent pipe (summing up head losses for the multi-diameter pipe) for a lower branch versus a single pipe on the upper branch. The CERM is a great reference by the way if you don't have it - get it.
