The PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR THE 11TH ED OF THE CERM (PPI2PASS) has some great examples - one is either considering parallel pipe or Hardy Cross method - then you can also consider an equivalent pipe (summing up head losses for the multi-diameter pipe) for a lower branch versus a single pipe on the upper branch. The CERM is a great reference by the way if you don't have it - get it.

Chelapati's Water Resources workbook is really good or Ram Gupta's text Hydraulics and Hydrological Systems.
