Also, if they are a semi-experienced lego builder, 8+ is probably ok.  My kid built an entire lego train by himself when he was 6.

ended up going with these two. thought the same on the 7yo thing, since it's the upper age in the range below. but thought this one would be less complicated just in case, but still something cool. saw the bridge jungly one at target, but once i had to get the purse at amazon (target had slim pickings) i went with what was available there. done and done.

When I was a kid, I would reverse engineer kits based on the finished picture so I could build it. We were poor and I had to make do with what I had. Thank goodness Lego catalogs were free.
