Hello all,

I work in a career and technical education high schools in upstate new york. As part of the new visions program we are offering a beginning engineering program in the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, after months of searching we were unable to find a teacher with an engineering experience. Because of my exceptional teaching skills... I have been asked to teach the program. Unfortunately I have no engineering experience. I am a math teacher. But, since I was involved in the development of the program they Thought me to be the best candidat. The idea of the program is to give the students a taste of the major engineering fields. This is a full day program. Students get english and social studies credit through an engineering, based coursework. I will be teaching physics calculus in the engineering piece. Now on to the questions. First I would really like to find textbook that can help me on this journey. Secondly, one of the major goals of this course is to get students excited about engineering through project based learning, what type of project should I do, is there a place where I can find these projects outline for me? The superintendent would like to see some flashy things like rc cars, rockets and something in robotics. Any advice you can give me would be helpful. Thanks in advance

First thing you need to do is figure out what area of engineering you want to teach.

I am partial to Civil since it is what I do.

If you are looking for activity ideas I would recomend NJIT's website. They should have something on there relating to a steel bridge competition and concrete canoe competition.

Not flashy, but not that expensive either.

Hi! My son's high-school has an engineering program where kids can take three years of "engineering" classes...they are, as you said project based...The first semester of the first-year class, the students were taught engineering drawing techniques and drafting and worked their way up to designing a bathroom for an aging super-hero for their final project.

They use the "Project Lead the Way" curriculum...for more info see their website http://www.pltw.org/

Good Luck!
