All,

I applied for the fall PE exam. I talked to the state board office before submitting my application about not having worked for a licensed PE. This is due to the

fact that I work in "industry exempt" field, and I have known of one PE in my 15 year career, and never worked for one. They said to write a letter to this fact and I would have a shot at it.

I wrote the board a nice letter, explaining my situation, telling them I would like to break the cycle, become a PE and help others do the same, by being a good reference.

I explained that being in industry exempt (product development) means there are very few PE's.

I asked them for an exemption in my case, giving them other good references and a completed application.

They sent me a denial letter citing Oregon codes saying I need at least one PE reference from a supervisor. They said my fees are non-refundable.

If I could get a supervisor reference that was a PE, they would forward my fees one time to the next exam. So, how in the heck do I get around this...am I just finished?

Please advise, anyone.

Thanks,

I would try to contact a real person on the board (usually there is a phone number or an email listed on the board's website) and discuss your case directly with them. If you can get one of them to agree that you are qualified to take the exam without a PE reference, ask them to write you a letter that you can include.

Does your company have any other offices that might have someone with a PE? Even one in another state would probably be enough.

My company has no other PE's. I

am going to call the board and see what I can do. I may try to push off the exam to April, 2011 and try and get to know one PE in the meantime by joining a local professional society. I will see if I can get a reference, even though I have not directly worked for them. Just have to jump the hoops I guess.
