Connecticut PEs Oppose Elimination of Licensing Board:
Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell's attempt to save the state money by abolishing the Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors has met stiff opposition from the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers.
CSPE Executive Director Paul Brady released a statement rallying professional engineers to speak out against this proposal. He believes that eliminating the board would cripple the engineering profession and negatively affect many businesses and government agencies that depend on professional engineering
services to protect the public health and safety as well as build the state's economy. Rell has also proposed increasing license fees, according to Brady, which he believes will hinder the state from approving new PEs and disciplining the profession.
Faced with a two-year state budget deficit of $8.56 billion, Rell submitted a budget proposal on July 30 that included a proposal to eliminate the licensing board and 69 other boards and commissions. She believes that many of the boards are only advisory in nature and that several state agencies are capable of handling the boards' duties. Connecticut has a sunset law that requires all boards and commissions to undergo a reauthorization process by the General Assembly every few years. The licensing board for PEs and surveyors is scheduled to expire in 2012 unless renewed by the General Assembly.
