I took the FE in April 2006 and passed the first time. I'd been out of college for 10 years. I used Lindeburg's FE Review Manual to prepare for the morning exam and thought that it was more than enough. I actually found that the exam was a lot easier than I had been prepared for. For the afternoon test I used Lindeburg's CERM and a lot of prayers since I wasn't quite sure how much knowledge was actually required. Don't know which of these helped more.
By the way I took the civil afternoon test.
