i'm going to take the exam at CA.

The only limits I know of are the requirement for pages to be bound and written in ink... other than that, ANYTHING can be written on the pages - though I should caveat, if you've somehow managed to subvert the examination security and you know the questions in advance, I don't recommend writing the questions and answers in your reference books!

I have no experience, but my answer remains "Yes, you can."

Personally, I would call your state board first and make sure. At worst, they will say no, and you still have two months to prepare for taking the test without that book. At best, they will say it's not a problem.

A few states don't allow certain types of books (usually worked examples), so those states may not allow something in a language that the proctors can't read.

California doesn't have any such restrictions... you can read about them here, which is linked from http://www.pels.ca.gov/applicants/2008tips.shtml.

If you have any doubt, by ALL MEANS, take the advice and call the board. Still, there's always the chance the proctor at the exam will have a different opinion, so perhaps the only fail-safe method is to ask a proctor before the exam starts.
