Once again, a government who doesn't know what they are doing, trying to regulate a profession they know nothing about.  It's crap like this that makes the people hate the government.

The California State Engineering Board is in support of the bill!

+1

Got this email this morning as well.

Apparently this "test" will be given when you renew your license and there is no pass or fail on it. You simply need to complete the test.

Pretty lame if you ask me. Why give a test if there is no pass or fail?

no offense but it just sounds like they are trying to keep people up to date on state laws...which do change or more are added.  how is taking a multiple choice test on the state laws and ethics a bad thing.  this sounds like a good thing if only to bring attention to new laws that could impact safety.

More fees + fewer engineers = higher revenue
The exam is proposed to be free and there is no failing.  You would only receive discipline action if you do not take the exam.

Also, wouldn't more fees + more engineers = higher revenue?  ;)

True.

BPELSG believes it is important for those individual licensees to be fully informed about proposed changes to those statutes and regulations that mandate how the licensee provides or performs professional services to or for the consumers of California.

BPELSG identified what it believes are a history of an unnecessarily high number of violations of the Professional Engineers Act, Professional Land Surveyors Act, Geologist and Geophysicist Act, and the regulations associated with those acts.

Even though it is already incumbent upon each licensed professional to develop and maintain a practical understanding of the laws that guide how services are performed or provided tothe public, BPELSG believes that by implementing a mandatory assessment of these laws, particularly periodic changes, all licensees will become much more educated and aware of these requirements which should ultimately leadto a decrease in violations which benefit the licensee as well as the public.

FYI,

SB 1085, introduced by Senator Roth, would require all Licensed Engineers to take an on-line multiple choice exam testing the licensee’s “knowledge of state laws and the board’s rules and regulations relating to the practice of professional engineers”, at the time of bi-annual license renewal.

Senator Roth also introduced legislation (AB 1069) that requires all adult male film actors to wear condoms. This guys is on a roll.
