Hi,

in the structural engineering reference manual by ppi 8th. Ed. Example 4.53, the bearing stiffeners are 8"X1/2" each, these stiffeners are slender per Table B4.1a, the example doesn't check it? Is that enough? Because the limiting ratio of bst/tst<=0.45(E/Fy)^0.5?

Thanks.

Look at what is really in compression. Are there any outstanding elements?

Basically you are checking a compression member with a kl/r=0 for these things.

PPI is notorious for not explaining things like this.

Thank you kevo_55, I agree with you for the bearing case, but the stiffeners are slender and they should be checked accordingly.

Regards.

zaidfadhill,

I think you need to take a step back and look at it from the purpose of chapter B.  Your stiffeners are essentially with a KL/r <= 25 which is clearly written in section J4.4 as an Fcr=Fy.

Thanks for stopping by.
