Thanks for all the replies. We impulse purchased another Maytag. Centennial 500 large capacity at Sears. I believe the only fancy feature it has is a moisture sensor that shuts the machine down when the clothes are dry. Mid-level price-wise. I hoping it's as dependable as the 20+ year old Maytag it replaces. Looking online, there are a couple of complaints that it's noisy. Ours is in the basement on a slab on grade so I thinking that this should not be an issue.
First of all "slab on grade" and "basement" are mutually exclusive. Second, I wouldn't count on anything built today being as reliable as something built 20 years ago. As the saying goes, "they don't make 'em like they used to".

Yes, but a concrete slab in a basement would be, by definition, below grade. You can have slab on grade, crawlspace, or basement.

ok wil. you caught me. it is in fact a below grade concrete basement floor.

I think MOST of the new models you will like much better than the one you have, but you'll find that they will never last 20 years. It's a shame really.

We recently got new washer and dryer. If possible, I think it would be wise to replace the pair if they are 20 years old. We got LG large-capacity front-load washer and matching dryer. The washer spins enough water out of the laundry that the dryer only takes about 60% of the time our old one did. Wash cycle is a little longer, but uses a very small amount of water.

We just went shopping for our new set the other day. Since we ended up saving a couple $k at closing (they had figured us putting 6 months of property taxes in escrow up front but the bills just showed up so the sellers had to pay it) we decided to go with the fancy-pants LG washer and dryer and there actually are several new features on those that the wife will actually use. Not sure of the model, but they are the front loading with the square-ish doors.
