Does anybody know where the formula to solve problem 14 came from?

What is exsec?

Also, why can't we use the Middle Ordinate formula?

Thanks,

Thanks,
exsecant(Theta) = secant(theta) - 1

You can use the middle ordinate formula, then deduct the middle ordinate + Rcos(theta/2) from the radius to get the external distance, but why do it, if there is a formular for the external distance?

I think they use the same formula as listed in CERM 78.5 and did the same as

"exsecant(Theta) = secant(theta) - 1", just sec(I/2)-1, where secant (theta)= 1/cos(theta).
