    Why Civil - Structural?

I have seen a mechanical engineer signing fire protection drawing and electrical signing fueling mechanical drawing...when the person who is responsible for signing is out on vacation... they can get away because it doesn't involve life and public safety. Other discipline signing over...

    Why Civil - Structural?

Well, I asked three questions but they can be all combined into one question: Is Civil-structural exam equivalent to the 16 hour Structural exam to serve as the bare minimum requirement and standard for someone to be competent enough to design a building/bridge structure? If the answer is a...

    Why Civil - Structural?

I mean really, ever since the Structural I, and Structural II exams came out in 2003 and the new 16 hours Structural exams in October 2011.... Why is Civil : structural afternoon still offered by NCEES now? Its all multiple choice questions in the morning and afternoon, no essay type problems...

Been Wanting to Start This Topic for Awhile

You actually can have your life back now *gasp*!! I wouldn't recommend taking both vertical and lateral back to back - unless you have too much money ($650 per exam?) and just want to see what's on the exam. I know there are few smart people who passed the exam back to back on first try, and I...

Question about references and taking SE exam in a non-SE state

That is correct. Illinois did accept the reference from SE's that I was "not directly work under" them.  You can always call and check with their board to be sure....just make sure you document the correspondence. One of my SE reference was actually a colleague who worked together long time ago...

Question about references and taking SE exam in a non-SE state

Since I first passed PE (structural I at that time) in 2004, when I took the New 16 hour SE in 2012, AR board just sent me an approval letter. I don't need to go through any working experience/education verification process for the approval to sit for exam. PE references was a big issue when I...

    Historical SE Exam Pass Rates

the passing rate is definitely higher now....I remember when the first structural exam came out back in 2004 or 2005, it was like....16% for first time takers.

HELP! Lateral Bracing in K, V, or inverted-V in OCBF

Hi guys, thank you for all your help and input. It's been very educating and refresh my memory from studying the seismic design manual. And Andy I think you nailed my question right on the spot. First I thought this project was in SDC C and thus thought that I can get away from meeting the...

HELP! Lateral Bracing in K, V, or inverted-V in OCBF

Ref: AISC Seismic Design Manual 3rd Print Seismic Provision 14.2 on page 6.1-48 States: "Bracing Members in K, V, or inverted -V configurations shall have KL/r <= 4 (square root)(E/Fy) For HSS memberswith Fy of 46ksi and E of 29,000 ksi, this is about 100. This greatly increase the size...

Guidance on Dealing with Codes for Civil-Structural Depth

Don't know if this will help you. But I remember when I took Structural 1 back in 2004, I read all the codes from cover to cover. I am not kidding - there are literally stack of books on my floor. Civil - Structural doesn't go in-depth like Structural I/II or the new 16 hr SE does. So hit the...

Error on the CA Survey Exam

good job. I dont know about seismic since I am structural background. I only studied about 20 hours on seismic and murdered the exam. I spent abour 120 hours on surveying and preped 4 months for it. Felt like crap and humbled when walked out the surveying exam. I figure if I pass it will be...

    Civil Morning References

same architectural engineering background with structural focus. take my advice, go take the SE instead of CE structural. your education has already cover what you need to be a SE.

Error on the CA Survey Exam

Well off topic here, but I think the cut score is probably lower than I expected. I figured if I passed it would be border line pass and show minimum competency. I agree that the exam is written in a way hard to rule out obvious wrong answer without actually solving it. Unlike the practice exam...

which survey book is good for "objective type" questions (non-calculation questions)

I took ca survey with prometric today and it sucked. Probably not answering your question but there are quite a bit of non calc question that totally got me but would probably be so easy to answer for those who have survey field experience... I put in about 125 hrs of study, went through 4...

ASCE 7-05 Simplified MWFRS & CC Parapet

so If I understand you correctly, any building - even if its a straight forward box simple flexible diaphragm enclosed building - you CANNOT use simplified approach (method 1) if it has, let's say 3'-0" of parapet wall to hide the RTU's? If that is the case, the only building that can...
