Transportation Section in AM Part of Test

I would do most of the vert and horiz. curve questions in the CERM, it has some good questions about clearance and elevations. You should probably bone up on the sight distance and braking questions in the CERM also. After doing some of those questions it might come in handy to know how quickly...

Assistance w/ Das: Bearing Capacity Problem 15.1

No, but you made me look. I hadn't finished the problem in the reply, only q-ultimate, q-all = 53472/4=13368. I think in the test they will give you the shape factors or tell you whose to use. If you are in doubt I'd use the factors in the CERM. This book Principles of Geotechnical Engineering...

Assistance w/ Das: Bearing Capacity Problem 15.1

Try using eq. 15.11 since this is a conrinuos footing; 15.12 is for square footing and has shape factors incorporated into it. So q-ult= cNc+YDfNq +0.5YBNy = 0 + 29257.2 + 24215.1 = 53472.3 psf. Good luck.

Can your employee or anyone find out how many times you took the exam?

I liked taking the PE so much I took 3 times, I wanted to get 80/80. I passed the third time, so I must have aced it. And it was the hardest of the three trys, so the "cut score" must have been low, so my percentage must have been 110% or more! Can I put that on a resume? I'd probably be pretty...

Who was the worst President since the Depression

Great topic and discussion. Here my 2 cents, if it is worth that: I didn't like Kennedy, I didn't like his accent when I was little. Incidently I believe he basically got us into Viet Nam, the general's consensus wass to stay out of there, no win situation. We were involved enough unheard...

    Passing score?

More than likely 56/80 70%. If you pass in most states you will never know. I would shoot for 35 or better in the morning and afternoon. That will take care any errors you trying to hurry. Remember read all the questions before answering them, and the ones you choose to work first make sure...

I would definitely get Das' Principles of Foundation book 4-5

    Soil Bearing Pressure

Hi, I was looking over some plans for precast sills for a Big R portable stell bridge, and listed the required Ultimate Soil Bearing Pressure for the sill to be 9,300 psf, and the required Unfactored Bearing Capacity for the sill to be 5,900 psf. My question is what is exactly meant by...

    Cross section leveling

It you were standing at the center-line stake at Sta 10+25, and it reads C6.0/0 you are 6' above the proposed finished sub-grade of the road. The road builder has to cut 6' at center-line. If you are at the left slope stake C4.0/16, you are standing 4' above and 16' horizontal from the proposed...

    Soil Classification Methods

In solutions part of the NCEES 2008 sample exam for morning question #106 is a pretty good chart for USCS classification.

    PE Problems vs Sample Problems

I would suggest you purchase the NCEES sample problems. Then try to solve them using the CERM as your first reference, then maybe All in one. I used 2008 NCEES sample problems, several of the morning breath questions were similar to afternoon questions in the NCEES Sample problems. I found...

    Six-Minute Solutions

For the morning you wouldn't need the 6 min geotech. You need to know: index properties phase problems, phase diagram. Could come up in const morning too. borrow pit/embankment compaction type questions with optimum moisture content/ max dry density. Could show up in trans or const morning...

    Need Surveying Questions

    17. Two tangents intersect with the following bearings: N69deg 30'15"E and N49deg 30'15". If a circular curve of radius 500 ft is to be fitted between the tangents, the degree of curvature is most nearly: (A) 9 deg (B) 10 deg © 12 deg (D) 14 deg

    Six-Minute Solutions

I guess it would depend on which discipline you take in the afternoon. I selected Geotechnical in the afternoon and used the the Six Minute Solutions book, I thought it helped. Especially learning concepts better, I did most of the problems. I tried to answer the problems using the CERM as a...

    No Studying

Yep in a perfect world, and engineering grad should be able to pass the FE/EIT exam first try, and with 4 years engineering experience a typical engineer should be able to pass the PE with minimal studying, and obviously some do. There is no crime in having to study to pass, and I am envious of...

    NCEES 2008 Water Resources Question

Hi, For question 508 there is errata for this question that explains the answer a little better, you should porbably get for this sample exam. This might help: Rainfall 1 is from time, t=0 to t=1 at an intensity of 1.5 in/hr Rainfall 1 is from time, t=1 to t=2 at an intensity of 0.7 in/hr...

    Reference Manual-Does it really matter?

I used the 8th edition when I passed last April, but I took geotech in the afternoon. It didn't have construction section, but chapters 80-85 cover most of what you need for the morning construction questions. So you will probably be okay, but if you can afford a new CERM I would suggest buying...

    Soil or Dirt

Neat topic, or or is dirty: Let see in road construction earth moving equipment moves dirt from cut areas to fill areas and then the soil is compacted. If you build a road and do not rock it and leave a dirt subgrade it is generally a dirt road. Soil road just doesn't sound right I would...

General Exam Question for those who have taken it

For wht it is worth: I do not know about Oct 2010, but in April 2010 the morning session was in this order construction, geotech, structural, transportation, and finally Water Resources & Environment. Eight questions in each module. I believe it was that way in Oct 2009, because I did...

Recent grad, first job, negotiate salary?

Hi, Looks like you received a lot of good advice to take the job, so you should take it. In your own words the offer was within the range of what you expected. If the job offers the oportunity to work under professional engineers doing the kind of engineering you set out ot do, it is a no...
