Just a quick poll.

What is the shortest, longest, and/or average period of time you or your Civil friends have spent in Civil Consulting?

I'm talking about the true consultant with many projects/clients, many hours per week, low profit potential, etc.

I'm not knocking it, just wondering. My experience has been that the average is 20 years before they either take a long break or switch entirely to a government job or position with a huge firm.

Thanks.

First job out of college was with a large general contractor, lasted just over 2 years.

Second job was with a consultant, was there one month shy of 5 years.

Current job is with a quasi-government agency doing CM, been here for 2.5 years.

Still at my first job with same consultant, been a little over 7 years.

What is the difference between consulting and working for a huge firm?

Aren't the huge ENR Top 200 firms all consulting firms?

I should have been more clear. I meant small consulting firms ie 20-30 people max.
