Does anyone invest in Exchange-Traded Funds (ETF) rather than normal Mutual Funds?

I am thinking about opening a Vanguard account which offers free trades on Vanguard ETF transactions. What interest me the most is the fact that ETF's have very low expense fees (sometimes less than 0.1%).

I am in the "buy-and-hold" investing mindset, and do not wish to "day trade" the ETF's.

Anyone have any experience in this investment style??

I own both mutual funds and ETFs. I like that many ETFs have lower expense ratios, but typically you have to pay a brokerage fee to buy or sell them, so it gets expensive if you want to invest in them periodically rather than all at once in a lump. Sounds like a good deal if you can buy them without any trading fees, though!

I have never invested in ETF but I periodically invest in THC.

My broker works out of his apartment, so his overhead is really low.

Why not just invest in index mutual funds? You'd still have the low expense ratio and no fees/loads.
