    Structural Engineer (EIT) Salary

Definitely underpaid.  I started out doing structural design with no experience right out of school at $50k in the Atlanta area.  That hourly rate is $37,500 per year in an area with a stupid high cost of living.  Take it if you have no other options, but this guy has got to know that you have...

Time until Structural License Issued Illinois

Just out of curiosity, did you have any issues with the education requirement?  Apparently you need 18 hours of structural design and analysis (and several things don't count) according to them or potentially 8 years of structural experience.  I think I have 15 hours of design and analysis...

Study partner for SE Apr 2016

Passed both exams (buildings) back in April of 2014.  I have particular expertise in timber and masonry design, but I'd be willing to answer any questions that people might have about anything to the best of my ability.

SE EXAM - READY FOR OCTOBER 2015?

I felt pretty good the day/night before I took it. Nervous, but ok. Then I got to the exam site and seeing everybody else there for the other disciplines for some reason freaked me out. I got really nervous, and anxious, and it took me a good 20 minutes to calm myself. Luckily, this 20...

SE EXAM - READY FOR OCTOBER 2015?

0-2 questions on prestressed conc is pretty accuarte from when I took it. I also "winged" it with just the PCI Manual and am pretty confident that I got both questions right since one was just pulling a value from a table and the other was an equation right out of the book. This is pretty...

    SEAW Refresher Course Notes

I didn't use the SEAW notes, but I did use notes from a company called Structural Engineering and Education Solutions, LLC. The notes/course were approved by the NCSEA and the SEA National Council too. I was given these by someone who I used to work with and they're pretty outdated now...

Why do civil engineers have to take so many exams?

You say that things are pretty routine and to some extent that's true, but as a structural engineer (part of civil) a big part of my job is determining load path and getting it to the ground in safe way. Sure this sounds easy, but as you know, structures are rarely nice boxes. Now, you could...

    Se exam results release date?

My original license was in a PE state, I just took the SE exam to get it. Has helped out a ton in the long run professionally/career-wise. The SE after your name really means something to people in the know. As I said above, IL is basically the same as other states, just you need the SE exam...

    Se exam results release date?

As far as I know, every state accepts the SE exam for getting a PE. I'm licensed in 9 states now and only one of them is an SE, all the others are PE states.

Codes Actually Needed for SE Exam

He's got this exactly right. I brought every code listed by NCEES in and I used every code. Every. Single. One. I easily got 4-6 questions right because I had the PCI and light gauge codes, and that was just by looking up a formula or table. You realistically probably need to get 30ish...

Why SE exam should be given instead of PE civil (Structural)?

Both of these. I took the SE because I was living in Georgia and was going to be required to in GA because all of my work as an EIT was in structural (commercial and residential). Shortly before I could take the SE in GA (literally like 3 weeks) I moved to Louisiana (to do oil and gas work)...

Thoughts from a First Time Exam Taker

I wouldn't worry too much about not being neat and referencing codes. When I took and passed the vert and lat buildings in April 2014, I didn't reference a single code in my afternoon sections, I just wrote the equation direct from the code and then substituted in my values on the next line...
