working for the Corp

:unitedstates: I have an opportunity to work for a local office for the Corp of engineers? Does anyone have a comment, good or bad ,regarding their benefits, hours, work load etc. I currently work as a staff eng for a local gov't but am interested in something different.

I don't work for the Corps of Engineers, but I know some who have, and generally I have heard good things. I've also heard not so good things. It probably matters which office. You should ask around. But generally, federal government is the way to go over local or state government these days, as far as overall benefits go. If you don't like it, you can still transfer your service to another federal job, in terms of your retirement credit and grade.

I worked with the CoE when I was on active duty a few times. And I have friends at a few offices. With very few exceptions, they like working there.

My sister works with the CoE in Cali. She travels a LOT for work, but a majority of that travel is training and job shadowing (gaining experience with different levels of management.)

I've heard a lot of good things about it, but there are some exceptions. I hear some of the smaller offices have a lot of turnover since they tend to have large gaps between projects. Thus the engineers are moved from office to office to stay busy. THis usually means a big move, like across the state or the country.

Just be sure to ask about that. Pay is usually pretty good and the benefits are top notch as well.
