What is the most common fault? I'm getting two different answers from two different resources.....

One says "Line-to-line" and the other says "Single Phase to Ground"

I would say line to ground. If a limb touches a bare power line it is a line to ground fault.

Line to ground is most common

Three phase fault is least common (and most severe)

What source shows the line-to-line as most common? Is it in some context (in distribution systems for example)?

Iahim,

I lost the website I went to, but after doing more research I see that what you guys say is indeed the most common fault (line to ground).

For those that have a copy of Power Systems Analysis by Grainger/Stevenson, refer to chapter 10, pg. 380. This provides a nice synopsis of the type of faults that can occur and also which are common and which are less common.

I have seen phase to ground being used as line to ground as the most common fault. All the same
