Principal Engineer – Shock, Structures & Dynamics
Would you like to play a key role in the development and acceptance of submarine combat systems? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer – Shock, Structures & Dynamics at our site in Filton.
As a Principal Engineer, you will be carrying out a variety of requirements and acceptance activities relating to the design and development of submarine combat systems. You will be working within the Shock, Structures and Dynamics team, liaising with a variety of project stakeholders, including engineering teams, suppliers and the Ministry Of Defence.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work across a number of different phases of the product lifecycle, as well as the chance to move onto other submarine programmes in the future, such as the Maritime Underwater Future Capability (MUFC) programme.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer – Shock, Structures & Dynamics will involve:
Decomposition of the whole boat shock requirements (e.g. policies, general technical requirements, etc.) to combat systems major systems engineers and designers
Generating derived requirements for technical specifications to be flown down to suppliers; reviewing tender compliance which is likely to involve supplier interaction in order to manage the delivery expectations with respect to the level of shock qualification evidence
Working with and reviewing documentation generated by the combat systems engineering teams
Reviewing, developing and approving supplier submitted physical test plans and procedures followed by review and acceptance of the test results
Reviewing and accepting supplier shock qualification evidence encompassing classical hand stress calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) reports
Presenting and delivering Combat Systems equipment shock qualification evidence to the customer
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential:
Degree or equivalent experience in an Engineering discipline
Experience of structural engineering and analysis techniques specifically classical hand stress calculations and various FEA analysis and interpretations of the output
Competent in the use of a mathematical package such as; Mathcad, Mathematica, etc.
Experience in the development and management of technical requirements and acceptance activities within one of the following areas: submarine, defence, construction, ships or similar environment
Desirable:
Experience in the design of equipment for submarines/surface ships and/or experience in producing shock qualification evidence (hand calculations, FEA) of equipment for submarines/surface ships
