dear all,

i am asking if the exam problem in geo not telling the equation need to use what we shall do?

for example for bearing capacity there are so many equations terzagi , general equation,------- etc.

each one will give different number which one we should use??????????

this repeated in all problems so many formula with out guidence which to use

This is a question that has been asked many many times and understandably.

Be sure that they (NCEES) are fully aware that adopting different theories can lead to as much as 10-15% difference in answers, They usually resolve this by one of two means

(a) spread the answers out even further than the 10-15% spread or

(b) embed the theory and table or graph for bearing capacity factors in the question itself (for example see question 520 in the Geotechnical afternoon sample questions book by NCEES)

In general, unless specifically prohibited to do so, using Terzaghi's theory is OK for STRIP, SQUARE and CIRCULAR columns. Non-square, rectangular columns will need specific shape correction factors for aspect ratio (and even there, there are several choices)

Hope this helps
