Hi.

I know nothing about Grand Rapids. I have to travel there for work, to baby-sit a compliance test, for 1 week around September 20 (no exact date yet). Is it a nice place? What is there to do? I will basically be on call for the most part. Thanks!

not sure how far the drive is, but the black hills of SD are nice to visit. mt. rushmore and the crazy horse project are pretty neat, we visited mamoth hot springs and the wild horse sanctuary, and then there is casino gambling in Deadwood.

as far as in grand rapids, I think they have one of those do it yourself waffle machines at the quality inn...

^ I guess an appropriate question is: Which Grand Rapids? I thought he meant the on in Michigan. :dunno:

Isn't the one in SD Rapid City?

And I swore Mammoth Hot Springs were in the MT section of Yellowstone.

:tardbang: I'm totally lost. Dumb Americans and geography.

D'oh! it is Rapid City. There's a guy a work that says he's getting half-timers, because he's not all the way there yet. It must be catching.

and it's the Mammoth site in Hot Spings. it's really a cool dig, similar to the LaBrea Tarpits in LA The Mammoth Site

I will be driving through Grand Rapids today actually on my way to a job site for the week. I have never stopped in Grand Rapids but it looks like it's a big enough place to find something to do. :)

Gerald Ford's Presidential museum is in Grand Rapids. Pretty sure they have some minor league sports teams as well.

If you're up for a 3 hour drive you can get up to Sleeping Bear Dunes national seashore, which is beautiful. Traverse City would be about a 2.5 hour drive from Grand Rapids. Grand Haven (aka "Coast Guard City USA ") is about a 45 minute drive, although you've missed the Coast Guard Festival.

I've never spent much time in western MI, hopefully someone else can give you ideas that won't involve driving half the day.

Pretty sure they have some minor league sports teams as well.

Your best bet for sports could be Grand Valley football. They are a national power, albeit Division II.

Midwest League baseball (West Michigan WhiteCaps) ends their regular season at Labor Day.

Hockey (Grand Rapids Griffins) is not going in September.

Michigan State football is only an hour's drive but they're on the road Sept 19th and Sept 26th.
