I know I am weird but I do think about this stuff....

If the correct, full name of the exam is the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam, why is it abbreviated as the PE Exam?

A PE (Professional Engineer) is what you become once you pass the exam, but it isn't the name of the exam.

The FE Exam is the abbreviation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam - that makes sense.

So.... why isn't the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam abbreviated as the PPE Exam?

Because the "Practice" is silent. All the practice happens before the exam, but what the proctors administer is actually the "Principles" part. So it's actually the "Principles Engineering Exam".

But they knew they couldn't call it the P.E.E., so they shortened it to P.E.

:true:

I have a cousin who was there.

Because that's the test they give you on work sites to make sure you know which Personal Protective Equipment to use.
