This guy is frickin cool. 

A local vigilante has been arrested after he tampered with red light cameras around Long Island. Stephen Ruth, 42, [COLOR= windowtext]has been charged[/COLOR] with third-degree criminal tampering and second-degree obstruction of governmental administration for using a pole to push several traffic cameras toward the sky, away from vehicles going through the intersections.

Not quite the same, but there was a similar system here in Cincinnati when they tried to do speed cameras in one of the little municipalities within the city limits.  It was a private company that set them up with the city's OK.  A lot of the fee went to the company and the city got their cut.  Enough people raised a stink about it that they ended up in court and a judge decided they were illegal so no more speed cameras.

One problem comparing the two is that I didn't have a problem with the actual speed cameras.  I did have a problem with a private company raking in huge profits off of it.  You don't want a ticket in the mail?  Then don't speed.  It was an area with a 25mph speed limit that had a problem with speeding.  The signs were clearly posted and I think the cameras even had like a 5-8mph leeway built in to them so unless you're speedometer was way off you would be fine.

I can see both sides.  The $ is supposed to go back to the City or County to make safety improvements at the locations. But Cities are greedy little whores who usually they spend a few bucks on signal controller upgrades and then do BS landscaping or something stupid with the rest of the money.

There was an intersection in Atlanta that made $1M a year (yes 1 Millionnnnn dollars..)  But they never spend a fraction of that amount there.. The population was large enough you could have 5 of those cameras in place and fund your entire Public Works Department.

Its raising money under the guise of safety, and is pretty much BS IM(professional)O

Near my folks and a major shopping Mall...the redlight cameras were bringing in $1M every month or so.  The tourism group for the mall make threats stop the camera or we take our $ elsewhere.  the town caved and removed 90 % of the cameras
