Dioxin pollution leads to more baby girls: study

I don't think the it is much of a surprise that Dioxin congeners can act as testosterone interferants and as such yield more female sexed fetuses than male. It is interesting to note in this article that the exposures are linked to chornic airborne releases rather than accute exposures yielding from eating contaminated game animals.

The big question: is it really a bad thing to have more girls than boys?? :eyebrows:

I usually hate all the fear-hype that the media generates, but I do believe that there has to be some effect from all of trace amounts of pesticides and other man-made toxins that are floating around out there. I have seen some presentations at conferences about some cary findings in the mainland regarding the effects of trace amounts of atrazine on frogs, causing them to switch sex, or even to grow eggs in their testicles (exploding the testicles!).

Humankind will either kill itself off through overt poisoning, or will evolve in odd ways to be able to better withstand it. But either way, I think we'll see a lot more cancers, birth defects, and subtle reproductive and brain effects (e.g., the autism increases, real or not) as time goes by. And just because the US regulates that stuff does not mean we are not being exposed to it, as the recent product recalls from China have shown.
