Failed the 1 hr glucose test by 1 point!!!!!! Dr. uses the more conversative set #'s...sometimes I think they just want to soak more $ out of the insurance companies.

That SUPER sucks. Did you eat anything - I mean anything the day of? My wife said that she's been told after she failed, that many people tell you to do it fasting, but some Dr.'s forget to pass that tidbit on, and it can skew the results.

My wife said... (NOT a DR's OPINION) - "If she missed it by one point and didn't fast - I wouldn't worry about it"

Hope the 3 hr goes by fast. My wife said for her, she only missed the first one by a few points, and that the 3 hr isn't horrible... but, that it will start to get tough an hour and a half or so into it, because your blood sugar will drop pretty rapidly - so just be prep'd for that uncomfortable feeling, but you'll be fine.

I fasted. dr said nothing after midnight except water, so by the time the test came around it was at least 12 hours since last eating.

The thing that bugs me is that there is not a consensus in the medical community on what range to use. The american diabetes association says 140 for a passing test and I was below that. Some drs, like mine use 130 as the cut off. Also having lab/chemistry background, depending on the lab and method, 130 and 131 are basically the same answer.

And i really don't want to sit in the waiting room (which always smells like pee btw) for 3 hours surrounded by sick people.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my 1st pregnancy and stayed on a diabetic diet for the remainder. I really do believe that high blood sugar can make the baby bigger and is not healthy for the mother. Good luck with the 3-hour.

SUCK! Good luck with the 3 hour, and I hope everything else goes smoothly.

Good luck with the 3-hour. Uncontrolled/undiagnosed gestational diabetes really can cause babies to be BIG. It sucks, but it's definitely something that can be managed.

My SIL failed the 1-hour by 1 point as well but her doctor didn't want to bother with the 3-hour since she's not overweight. Lo and behold, she gave birth to our 9 lb 4 oz niece and while she was pushing her OB felt like saying, "This kid is really big. Hmmm, maybe we should have followed up on that glucose tolerance test." Unfortunately, baby had a hard time regulating her own blood sugar and had to have a heel stick repeatedly for blood sugar checks ; SIL would nurse her and she'd get her heel stick. Poor kid was not a happy baby that first day, but she's fine now (and is a normal-size 2 month old). In my search for an OBGYN who still does obstetrics, I ruled out SIL's doctor as soon as I heard about that!

Good luck if you are still searching. We live a rural area, so all drs are family practice, so they are the obstetrician and the pediatrician. kind of nice not having a bunch of different drs.

Yeah, it also burns me that they keep lowering what's 'normal.' I suspect the drug companies are behind it. I take drugs for BP, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, and the levels are all within the normal range of ten years ago.

^ I was lucky. My cholesterol was 650, and my Triglycerides 2100. I don't even think that was ever normal...on Mars!
Dude, is your liver on strike? That's crazy high.

I had a coworker that tried the "atkins" diet (or so he liked to think it was what it was), his Dr. told him to try the Atkin's diet, and he saw that as an opportunity to eat bacon and sausage everyday for his dietary intake for about 2 months straight. All of a sudden, he started breaking out with a horrible skin rash. Went to the Dr.

Found out his cholesterol was sooo high, his body was trying to rid itself of it through his skin pores and they were getting clogged.

Ick.

With your numbers that high, hope the lowering drugs today can get it back down to "normal" whatever that means anymore (<200 for cholesterol?).

Snick - when do you go back for your other test, or are you going to do it?

That's just gross.

I have an appointment thursday morning for the 3hr. Figured I might as well just do the stupid test, it will get me out of work for a day. BY the time the test is over it wouldn't make the drive to work worth the gas.

Had a liver infection last fall - eyes turned yellow and everything. Things have normalized.

Atkins diet is a joke. Way to knock out the bottom rung of the food pyramid. Mmmm, I think I'll eat a side of beef and wash it down with a glas of gravy. You may lose some weight, but screw up your blood pressure, etc. along the way.

depends on the person. My parents have used the atkins diet and they both lost weight and were able to keep it off. They just go in spursts, like 6 months on 6 months off.

My parents did pretty well on Atkins, too. Then again, Mom had triple bypass in March, so maybe they aren't the spokesmodels for the group.

woohoo. Dr. office called and I passed the 3hr test. The 100g glucose drink wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it would, actually went down a lot easier than the 50g. the wait was the killer, 3 hrs sitting in dr office waiting room chairs is murder on the bum. I don't have the preggers waddle yet, but I definitely waddled that day.

Dr did say to try to avoid sugary beverages and lots of sweets though. Since I usually only eat 1 candy bar a week I think I'm good in that respect.

Great news Snickerd!! :party-smiley-048:

My wife very rarely ate sweets until about a month ago and now that is all she wants, so hopefully you don't get those cravings when you're around 7-8 months pregnant.
